The recently launched eGovernment program is said to create a New Fiji with improved levels of communication within and outside of Fiji.

Interim Minister for Finance, Mahendra Chaudhry termed eGovernment as the application of ICT or information communications technology by government agencies to enhance and improve public sector delivery.

A memorandum of understanding was signed in May 2004 between the Fiji Government and Chinas Ministry of information Industry for a loan to finance Fijis first eGovernment program.

According to Mr Chaudhry, this was to develop and implement government communications infrastructure and to give high-priority to government service online.

"I share the aim of governments ITC Service department to increase the vision and capability of ICT in Fiji for the benefit of all citizens," he said.

"All eGovernment stakeholders, citizens, businesses and government employees must be brought into the ITC network."

A survey was conducted to assess Fijis current state of eGovernment readiness which revealed that almost 50 per cent of ministries have no ICT budget plans in place.

More than 50 per cent of government services require customers to make at least two trips and 60 per cent of the services need more than two levels of approvals.

The launch gave an opportunity to view pilot project applications such as the e-citizen portal and the e-investment tracking system.

Mr Chaudhry launched the program yesterday.
