Public accessibility to government services is expected to improve significantly following approval of a concessional loan by the Chinese Government.

On Monday night, Fiji's Caretaker Minister for Finance, Jone Kubuabola and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao signed a memorandum of agreement that saw the approval of a loan of $US20 million ($35,618,878).

Ratu Jone said the loan would be given through China's Export Import Bank and would be delivered to government's Information Technology Centre to set up Fiji's e-Government.

"The loan is $US20m that is to be repaid over 20 years with a five-year grace and an interest rate of two per cent, so it is quite concessionary. It will be administered by the Government's ITC and the implementation period will be over three to four years.

"It is a very exciting project that will see all government services being put on line for the public," Ratu JOne said.

He said the concept of e-Government "is expected to improve government's efficiency and accessibility".

Ratu Jone said they had already identified applications and implementation would continue over the next four years.

He said two major corporations abroad would be working with Fiji to see that the concept was introduced within the allocated period.

The system will give people easier access to all government services.

Meanwhile, Caretaker Minister of Foreign Affairs, Kaliopate Tavola said they were very excited with the MOU signed regarding the concept of e-Government.

Mr Tavola said apart from improving efficiency and accessibility, the concept would bring about greater transparency.

He said the Government would work closely with China to ensure the system was introduced.
