Tanzanians have been challenged to leave no stone unturned to be abreast with ICT knowledge compatible with requirements for speedy accuracy and efficiency to live up Mwalimu Nyerere’s metaphorical expression that Tanzanians “should run while others walk” to register speedy development.

Zanzibar Second Vice President Ambassador Seif Ali Iddi made the challenge to that end at the inauguration of the Zanzibar first ever ICT Laboratory facilitated by the Open University of Tanzania (OUT) recently, being the 12th ICT laboratory under OUT auspices in the country.

Others already inaugurated are located in Manyara, Singida, Mwanza, Mbeya, Iringa, Kigoma, Kagera, Katavi, Shinyanga and Rukwa regions.

Inaugurating the ICT Laboratory located at Beit-El -Ras area near Nkrumah Campus of Suza State Universit , Ambassador Iddi urged people to use the facility to develop computer literacy to cope with developments, to be abreast with social and cultural developments for efficiency and compatibility with worldwide efficiency whenever possible, rather than lagging behind.

He underlined the need for people to use the ICT facility effectively to be within reach of efficiency and compatibility drive. Appropriateness is needed to be conversant with the latest developments within and outside Africa as a part of the global world, he said.

He commended OUT in its exemplary provision of education through distance learning, deploying what was within reach including effective ICT applications. This mode of education delivery had become a major education provision pillar in the country, through effective communication within and outside the country, he stated.

He also paid glowing tribute to OUT Vice Chancellor Professor Tolly Mbwette, declaring that under his visionary leadership the university had expanded in education provision beyond the East Africa region to now becoming virtually an international university registering students from within and outside the region.

Ambassador Iddi, who also has functions previously held by the Isles Chief Minister, regards the Open University of Tanzania as having liberated many people for bringing education to them at various levels through distance learning, ranging from Certificate, Diploma, first degree, post graduate diploma, the Masters degree to the Doctorate degree.

In his welcoming speech, Vice Chancellor Professor Mbwette said since the university started in 1993, about 67,103 students had registered in various fields of study where about 13, 491 had graduated in various fields of study and categories.
