Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has introduced a Smart Digital Graveyard System to facilitate people with a hassle-free burial process and trace their relatives' graves easily even after several years.

DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam on Thursday inaugurated the system at a function at Nagar Bhaban Auditorium in the city's Gulshan area, said a press release.

Using the 'Graveyard Management DNCC mobile app, a service recipient could complete all procedures for burying any dead body by providing the necessary documents in the app instead of going to the graveyard.

Phase two of this app will have a database of bodies buried in the graveyard and people will be able to collect burial certificates from the app.

Besides, the app will have a store of information related to the location of old graves, names of buried people, and vacant places for burial.

According to the press release, initially six graveyards- Banani Graveyard, Mirpur Martyred Intellectual Graveyard, Rayerbazar Graveyard, Uttara 4 No Sector Graveyard, Uttara 12 No Sector Graveyard and Uttara 14 No Sector Intellectual Graveyard- have come under the smart digital graveyard management system while all graveyards in the DNCC area will come under the system gradually in phases.

Speaking at the function, DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam said the government is now working to build the 'Smart Bangladesh' after the successful implementation of the vision 'Digital Bangladesh'.

The DNCC is working to bring the graveyard under a digital management system as part of making a 'Smart City', he added.

"It was very challenging for us. Big-sized digital screens will be set up at every graveyard. Information related to graves will be screened there. We are working to bring them under the total management system," Atiqul said.

DNCC Chief Executive Officer Md Selim Reza presided over the function while ICDDR, B Executive Director Tahmid Ahmed and Senior Scientist and Senior Director Shams L Arefin, DNCC Chief Health Officer Brigadier General AKM Shafiqur Rahman, Chief Engineer Brigadier General Md Amirul Islam, Chief Waste Management Officer Commodore SM Shariful Hasan, Secretary Mohammad Masud Alam Siddiq and councillors and senior officials of the city corporation were present at the function.
