Internet.org, a Facebook invention that allows free internet browsing through mobile gadgets, has been introduced in Bangladesh.
ICT Minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak, has launched the service at an event with Robi Axiata Limited on Sunday.
Through the service, Robi subscribers will now have access to more than two dozen free basic services ranging from health, news, jobs, and e-government services, according to the Facebook page of Internet.org
Facebook created Internet.org to get 4.5 billion unconnected people on the internet.
Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in a video message said: “We're taking the next step with Internet.org by enabling anyone to build free basic internet services to help connect the world. We'll make faster progress towards connecting everyone if we all work together and give people even greater choice of services.”
“Connecting everyone is about preventing discrimination too. More than 4 billion people don't have access to the internet and the opportunities it brings. If we connect them, we'll lift hundreds of millions of people out of poverty.”
Robi is the second largest mobile operator in the country in terms of the earned revenue of Tk4,942.3 crore revenue and 11.24% net profit in the last year.
As of March, Robi had around one crore internet users out of 4.43 crore in Bangladesh, according to Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC).
