The government has started a process to provide e-services in issuance of visas and work permits to the foreign investors aiming to woo foreign investment.

To this effect, Board of Investment (BoI) has adopted a pilot project in November 2014 to execute the services and got a satisfactory response from the investors.

Consultant to the BoI of the e-services, Md Sirajul Islam disclosed this while giving a presentation on the service at the annual general meeting of France-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIFB) Monday.

Under the initiative, any interested investor or their employee can obtain visa within a day and work permit two times in a month without physical presence of any representative of the applicants for visa or work permit in Bangladesh. ´

According to Mr Islam, more than 350 applicants for visa and 20 applicants for work permits got the e-services till to-day after inauguration of the services.

After getting a positive response from the investors, the government is mulling its plan to completely stop manual services in this regard from 2nd May, 2015, said Mr Islam.

Ambassador of France for Bangladesh, Sophie Aubert, president of CCIFB, Tarek Elba, economic counselor of France Embassy, Pierre Fabre, , vice-president, Roland Reynier, treasurer, M. Maksud, director, Dr Rifat Rashid, director of CCIFB and executive committee members of the joint chamber Syed Mahmudul Huq and Humayun Mahmud, were present at the AGM among others.

During the meeting, Mr Tarek Elba said business climate in Bangladesh will be much better if the political situation improves.

"Visit by French investors to Bangladesh decreased in recent years only because of political instability. It is seriously hampering investment in Bangladesh despite having vast opportunity," he added.

"We are very optimistic of doing well in Bangladesh. Now it is our duty to show how better quality product the French companies can offer to the consumers," Mr Elba, also the CEO of Lafarge Surma Cement Ltd said.
