People living in Jessore town have started getting consultancy from specialist physicians of the capital city for their primary health treatment using modern technology known as 'telemedicine'.

In the telemedicine system, patients with the payment of Tk 200 to Tk 300 get live consultancy about their disease through Digital Imaging and Communication in Telemedicine (DICOT) as well as Telemedicine Information, Management and Education System (TIMES).

At the end of consultation, the patients get printed prescription for buying medicine.

Telecom operator Grameenphone as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) in cooperation with Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has set up the telemedicine centre in Jessore District.

The quality of the telemedicine device has been developed recently through incorporating stethoscope, sphygmomanometer and scanner of ECG, X-ray to provide more accurate diagnosis.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mustafizur Rahman inaugurated the service on June 28 at the Information Service Centre at his office where a group of visiting journalists from Dhaka observed a live consultation between a patient and a physician.

Mustafizur said telemedicine would put in view the new dimension in the e-services here as the district was declared as "digital district" by the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in December last year.

He informed that the telemedicine service would be introduced at remote Machhim Nagar, Chashada and Bakra Union Information Centres also.

Grameenphone had started the Telemedicine project at four Community Information Centres (CICs) on a pilot basis in 2012.

Initially, only the patient who was suffering skin disease got the treatment. Now, the people will get different kinds of treatments from the specialist doctors.

Telemedicine Working Group of Bangladesh (TWGBD) is the technological partner and Aysha Memorial Specialised Hospital, Dusthya Sasthya Kendro and Concern Worldwide are the implementing partners of this project.
