All govt offices at dist, upazila levels to be under same network

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) yesterday approved a Tk 1,333 crore project to bring 17,500 government offices at the district and upazila levels under an ICT network.

China will provide Tk 1,087 crore in loans for the project, titled “National ICT Infra-Network for Bangladesh Government Phase-II”, according to a planning ministry statement.

A framework agreement and a loan agreement have already been signed in this connection, the statement said.

The approval for the project was given at an Ecnec meeting held at the NEC conference room with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

The project will cover Bangladesh Secretariat, Bangladesh Computer Council, 7 divisional and all district and 485 upazila level government offices, the planning ministry said.

The information and communication technology (ICT) network has been created under the ongoing “Bangla Gov Net” scheme with Korean assistance.

This network would be expanded to government offices at grassroots level through this project, also known as Info Sarker Project.

Under the project, 800 video conferencing systems will be installed at different offices, including the ministry, government departments and training centres.

It will help establish twelve training labs at different universities and set up a Wi-Fi network. Besides, 25,000 tablet PCs will be distributed at Bangladesh Secretariat and other government offices, the statement said.

Yesterday’s Ecnec meeting approved another project, “Rural Employment and Road Maintenance Programmes” aimed at improving the socio-economic conditions of about 60,000 ultra poor people of 4,548 unions through employment generation.

The project, involving Tk 1,102 crore, also aims to keep around 1,00,000 kilometre long rural roads in good condition with proper maintenance throughout the year.

The Ecnec meeting approved 7 other development projects involving Tk 1,753 crore.
