The introduction of the system of on-line tax return is certainly a major step towards the country's economic e-governance. Already, on-line banking has become quite popular among certain segments of society although the fear of smart technology is yet to attract the majority of the population known as computer illiterate. The good news is that the younger generations are finding such advanced technologies most convenient and they are making good use of such gadgets. Digitalised economic transactions also warrant a change in the mindset -one that comes with the familiarity with the technologies used. Since e-payment system makes the tax regime simpler than ever imagined before, it is likely to bring about changes all around. First, it promises to reduce the paper work to the minimum and therefore less time consuming. Second, there is every likelihood that more people will feel prompted to furnish their tax return on-line simply because they will not have to face the traditional hassles that tax-payers have so long been encountering.

About the merit of the system there is hardly any argument, provided that the system is made efficient and flawless. To the corporate world, the newly introduced system of tax payments will be most welcome because big industries and companies have easy access to the facilities required for e-payment. It will however be difficult for the retail businesses like groceries which have large sale and income but have no skilled manpower to maintain financial accounts. Unless economic ventures are modernised to a point where economic transactions on a day-to-day basis are computerised, the owners of businesses will not feel confident of returning tax on-line. That means, businesses must have access to computers, and to make it complementary, the receiving authorities must spare no effort to make the system customer-or client-friendly. Initially, an enquiry desk manned by highly professional people, who can fast attend queries and complaints on websites, may be of help.

Financial e-governance is a major component of digitalising the country's administration. Much will depend on its success. The National Board of Revenue (NBR) too has a daunting task before it. Creation of adequate physical facilities to be handled by skilled and efficient people at the desk is a must for entry and management of accounts and data. If the system works smoothly, it may even expand the tax net because of the extra advantage it will offer to the tax payers. However, inept handling can put the matter in a shambles. Involved here is just payment of money and not disbursement, so people outside the NBR with an ulterior motive will consider any intrusion a misadventure. But in this age of website hacking, one never knows what catastrophe the hackers can cause simply because of the sadistic pleasure of it. So, it would be advisable to be on guard against such black acts by diabolical minds capable of technological wizardry.
