Speakers at a discussion on Sunday said E-Health schemes should focus on providing healthcare to common people avoiding the use of the technology that would not be of any help for them.

When evolving the technology emphasis should be given on ideas that would make healthcare more accessible to the general people above everything else, they added.

The discussion on Strategic Priorities of Digital Bangladesh (SPDB) 2010 on Health was held in the NEC Conference Room of the Planning Commission.

The General Economics Division (GED)of the Planning Commission and the Access to Information (A2I) Programme in association with the Ministry of Science and Information and Communication Technology (MoSICT) organized the discussion.

Secretary of the Health and Family Welfare Ministry Muhammad Humayun Kabir chaired the discussion while GED Chief Fakhrul Ahsan and Member Dr Shamsul Alam, among others, spoke it. Mahrukh Mohiuddin, Consultant of (A2I) Programme presented the keynote paper in the discussion.

Presenting the keynote paper, she pointed out various e- Health initiatives taken by the government and hoped that people living in remotest areas of the country would have access to healthcare with the e-Health initiatives.

The initiatives include mobile phone-based services where medical doctors would attend to phone calls anytime any day of the week, enhanced management information system and SMS-based services where pregnant women can receive advice regarding their situation through SMSs.

The speakers stressed the need to create public-private partnership where the government and private sector can make collaborative efforts to enhance e-Health initiatives and make them accessible to the masses.

They underscored the importance of creating a platform for such partnership.

Health and Family Welfare Secretary said in a realistic perspective, changes from different initiatives would not be visible in one day. But in time their effects would be visible in a wider array.

He called for suggestions and technical assistance from the private sector in implementing the e-Health initiatives.

He said all government office should use Unicode Database system for easy excess of information.
