Finance Minister AMA Muhith today said in order to build a Digital Bangladesh, the government has to be digitized first by computerizing its ministries, departments and offices.

To make ICT affordable for digitizing Bangladesh in implementing government's Vision 2021, the government is reviewing a tax programme by January next year, he said. All arrangements including fibre optic network, WiMax, Gateway have been made for access to Information Communication Technology (ICT), he said.

Every service, both at government and private level like banking, health services, schools, courts have to be digitized so that people get services at homes or their workplaces, he said while addressing as the chief guest a roundtable titled "Road Map for Digital Bangladesh by 2021" organized by The Bangladesh Observer at a city hotel here.

Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Post and Telecommunication Hasanul Haque Inu MP addressed the function as the special guest. Editor of The Bangladesh Observer Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury chaired the function. Dr Lutfor Rahman, Professor of Department of ICT of Dhaka University moderated the function.

On the importance of digitization, the Finance Minister said digitization can reduce corruption and establish transparency and accountability at all stages. "People can see the progress with the cases filed with police station, development in land registration process, while students can consult websites on academic purposes through the network," he added. Education on computer literacy and training on uses of internet are essential to make Digital Bangladesh, he said adding the Mohajote government in its election manifesto prioritized the fields on which the country has to make progress and now in the recently announced ICT Policy it has declared a road map. "Besides introducing e-Commerce and e-Governance, it is needed to computerize and enact a law on ICT related issues," he said adding the Year 2011 could be declared as the Digital Year.
