Zimbabwe will host an inaugural e-health symposium from December 15-18 to share best practices and ICT opportunities for the health sector, according to Josiah Dimbo, Director of African Media on Economic Development.

The symposium, held under the theme, ‘Unleashing e-health for a healthy nation: Tapping into opportunities that enable healthy outcomes’, will also see awards being presented, and will showcase an exhibition.

More than 200 representatives from the health sector, ICT industry, government, civil society organisations and the private sector are expected to share best practices and digital opportunities in the health sector.

"The symposium will also focus on discussions and the exchange of knowledge and ideas to shape the future of Zimbabwe's healthcare landscape," said Dimbo.

Zimbabwe's health sector is currently grappling with a host of challenges. According to AMED, Zimbabwe needs to embrace ICTs to catch up with other technologically developed nations. Recently the government launched an e-governance programme to mainstream ICTs in many sectors of the economy.

"In our quest to compliment the e-governance programme, the e-health symposium is going to critically examine issues affecting the health sector. The symposium will also highlight the advantages of e-health to the government and other stakeholders in the health sector," said Dimbo.
