Permanent secretary Sam Kundishora revealed that a review of the National ICT policy, launched in 2007, is planned. At a recent ICT symposium convened in Harare by the Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC) with the theme of embracing ICT for business growth, Kundishora said some of the initiatives being carried out by the ministry include upgrading the ICT literary rate to match the country’s literacy rate above 90 percent with a series of training, awareness programmes and road shows.
There are also plans to promote competency in use of ICT tools and to familiarise the community with relevant technology.
To do so the ministry has established a government ICT school to train civil servants on such issues.
Other initiatives which are being employed include providing capacity building to other Government-line ministries so they can be competent in ICT issues, promotion of an e-government framework and build a robust ICT industry in the country.
"ICT has a great potential for contributing to our GDP as an enabler," Kundishora said. He also outlined challenges hampering ICT development including poor liquidity flows and slow investment uptake in the sector and poor energy supplies.
Kundishora said his ministry will facilitate some consultative meetings with relevant stakeholders to come up with input for the proposed new national ICT policy framework to replace the current policy launched in 2007.
