The national geoportal, which acts as a single entry point for all official geodata in Luxembourg, launched several new features in May 2011: a mobile version, route planning, a third dimension (altitude) display and advanced printing.

Initially launched on 10 February 2011 by the Cadastre and Topography Administration of the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg, the geoportal provides access to the general public mapping window, free access to various thematic mapping windows and an eshop for online ordering of geodata and related products.

The geoportal allows users to:

  • search for maps by the name of a commune and/or street, by waterways or by parcel number;/li>
  • display maps, cadastral plans, aerial photos, data on water, the environment or agriculture, etc.;
  • print a map to scale in PDF form.

The geoportal's strength lies in being able to combine these different sources in offering users the ability to determine their geolocation anywhere in the country.

A mobile version of the geoportal has been available since late-May 2011 with the following features:

    a display for topographic maps, aerial images, a road map and a cadastral map;
  • the ability to search within the Cadastre and Topography Administration database for addresses, communes and localities;
  • the use of geolocation means offered by mobile devices (GPS).

This mobile version meets international standards and is compatible with most modern devices.

Users who wish to calculate the route between multiple points in Luxembourg can now do so at 'http://routing.geoportail.lu'. This site enables a user to enter a series of points on a topographic map or to use an address, and to display the quickest or shortest route for a selected mode of transport (including by car, on foot, by bicycle). The result is shown on a cartographic background and an interactive description is displayed next to the map. The route and its description can be printed in PDF format.

In the mapping window 'http://map.geoportail.lu', new tools are used to calculate the elevation profiles of hiking trails, or other types of trails. These profiles are calculated based on the official digital terrain model of the Cadastre and Topography Administration, and can also be exported for other uses. Another feature displays the azimuth - the distance and difference in altitude between two points.

In addition to the printing features for paper sizes A3 and A4 which have been available for some time, the geoportal now allows for the addition of a title on a printed map and the choice between PDF and PNG image formats when printing.

The geoportal and the data it contains are managed by the Cadastre and Topography Administration, which was mandated by the government as part of the INSPIRE Directive to make spatial data and geographic services of Luxembourg public bodies accessible centrally.
