Cooperation of Azerbaijani and Lithuanian ICT companies will allow setting up joint manufacturing of high technology products, Azerbaijani Deputy Minister of Communications and Information Technologies Iltimas Mammadov said at a meeting with the head of Lithuanian Business Confederation Valdas Sutkus on Monday.

Addressing the meeting, Mammadov spoke about the work carried out in the ICT sector in Azerbaijan and activities that will be undertaken this year, namely the implementation of the broadband internet project and expansion of fiber-optic infrastructure in remote areas.

He said the project's realization will allow the population to have broadband internet access throughout the country.

Sutkus, for his part, said Azerbaijan holds the leading place on ICT in the region, noting that the announcement of 2013 as the ICT year in Azerbaijan as well as the creation of high-tech parks in the country is an important development, which attracts Lithuanian companies' attention.

Earlier, Communications and Information Technologies Minister Ali Abbasov said revenues generated by the ICT sector in Azerbaijan currently stand at nearly $2 billion and a four-fold increase in revenues will be possible by increasing the role of the ICT sector in exports and growth of the domestic market.

2013 was declared the year of information and communication technologies in Azerbaijan in accordance with a presidential decree on January 16.

Azerbaijan has maintained its leading position among the CIS countries in terms of broadband Internet penetration over the past three years.

Internet penetration rates increased from 65 to 70 percent in 2012. Work was carried out to improve the quality of data transmission services. The capacity of international communication channels more than doubled compared to 2011 and fees were reduced by 35 percent.

Some 103 million manats (about $131 million) have been allocated for the implementation of the broadband Internet development project in Azerbaijan in 2013, which means further spread of broadband Internet in the country and an increase of Internet users to 85 percent.
