The National Electronic Digital Signature (EDS) has been recently presented by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies in Azerbaijan.

Within the EDS project, an e-government certification centre is established which is responsible for providing digital signatures to governmental agencies. There is also a centre for service of commercial structures.

Communications & IT minister Ali Abbasov has stated that the EDS system will soon be introduced officially and issue of EDS will start.

“Use of open infrastructure during system development allows it to integrate with the new software on the EDS. Up to date, pilot EDS software of company Sinam has been introduced in the system,” Abbasov said.

The EDS, realized by companies Microsoft, Ultra and Azerin, has the same effect as the personal signature of the user. It is used in inter-agency electronic document management, e-commerce, when submitting e-applications.

When accomplished, EDS system project will reduce time, eliminate bureaucracy and give many other benefits to individuals and legal entities. The EDS will also have a positive impact on development of e-services and provision of information security.

“EDS introduction will enable to develop and spread further e-services that will increase ICT sector earnings with their following bringing up to the level of oil revenues,” Abbasov added.

For getting an EDS, the applicant should present ID, an application for EDS, and a document confirming payment of the service. After confirmation of the request, a contract is signed with the applicant, who is then registered in the register and is given a card with EDS. The software required for use of the signature, can be downloaded at www.e-imza.az.
