The Government of Kenya is planning to set up an e-Government Services Office

Plans for the office have been laid out in a document, Draft National Information and Communication Technology Policy, according to a report in the Nairobi newspaper The Nation. It says the Government intends to set up the e-Government Services Office to implement an information technology strategy for various ministries by June 2004. It is likely to be part of the Office of the President and responsibilities will include developing an implementing policy for e-government.

"In the overall ICT policy formulation and implementation, the Government will act as a facilitator, enabler and regulator of the ICT sector to allow the private sector and civil society organisations to operate effectively," the document says.

Three bodies have been created to move the initiative forward: a permanent secretaries committee, a ministerial e-government committee and a steering technical team. The committee of permanent secretaries has been charged with coordinating the initiative.

e-Government committees are also being set up in every ministry to review ICT policies. Each is chaired by a permanent secretary.

The Government plans to upgrade the court registry and library management system to create a national repository of cases, provide structured cabling for ministries and set up an Integrated Population Registration System.
