The 172 Brazilian municipalities that pre-registered to participate in the federal government's Minha Cidade Inteligente (my smart city) program have submitted technical projects and due documentation for the implementation phase, the ICT and innovation ministry said.
The deadline for the submission of projects was June 30. By the eve of that date, just 38 out of the 356 localities that expressed interest in the program had presented their projects.
The proposals will now be evaluated according to criteria such as internet access indicators, services provided to citizens and technical viability, with results being released in 30 days. Priority is for cities with low connectivity indicators.
Under the budget earmarked for the program, at least 30% will go to small towns, 30% to mid-sized cities and 20% to large ones, MCTI said.
Those selected will receive a fiber optic network to connect public buildings, IoT applications, e-government apps and free internet access points to be used by the public.
Minha Cidade Inteligente is the rebranded Digital Cities program, which was first launched in 2012 and benefitted 342 localities in two calls.
