The information, communication and technology (ICT) minister John Nasasira has challenged ICT institutions to design practical solutions that will be used in enabling the development and growth of the country.

Speaking at a function where 28 informal artisans were certified after undergoing training at the Uganda Institute of Information Technology (UICT), Nasasira, in a speech read by the permanent secretary, Patrick Samanya, said mixing informal and formal ICT training will help in seeing that a good base of ICT is formed.

The technicians where admitted under the Uganda Technicians and Information Technology Associations (UTITA), which is trying to see that the artisans attain formal qualifications, with most of them having dropped out of school at primary level.

“ICT has been made a priority area as a means of propelling transformation and development. Our target as the Government now is to see to it that all institutions address the component of using ICT for service delivery,” read the message.

Nasasira thanked the artisans for dedicating their time to improving informal technology by getting a formal way, which will help them understand better what they are doing.

“These are the people we need to break away from the normal routine and become innovative. We do not only need students who are just innovative, but those that can produce prototypes that can be activated in real life and also multiplied. We need to collaborate with other industrial people to make sure that we put all these innovations into use,” said Nasasira.

The artisans later exhibited their innovations that included turning computer monitors into televisions, inventing capacitors that are self-powered and also offering better Uninterrupted Power Supply, which also regulates energy.

“We still have more training for the artisans. We have also signed a memorandum of understanding with other institutions so that their students do internship from Kalitunsi,” said Andrew Yiga, the UTITA chairman.
