Speaking at an ICT workshop for Cabinet ministers in Kampala on Sept. 21 Amama Mbabazi, Uganda's prime minister said government is committed to implementing the technologies through its agencies like the National Information Technology Authority-Uganda and the Uganda Communications Commission.
Mbabazi called for the provision of basic skills in information security. "We can't run away from ICT," he said. "We have to promote it in a better manner."
ICT minister Ruhakana Rugunda said implementing good ICT policies would improve access to information, improved delivery of social services, cause a conducive environment for business among others.
He said ICTs have been embraced as key pillars for socio-economic transformation and development globally. He said government has continued to give it priority as put in the National Development Plan and in the vision 2040.
The sector contributes 5% to national gross domestic products (GDP).
The telecoms subsector alone employs more than 940, 000 people as of Dec. 2010. It is estimated that Uganda has over 17million mobile phone subscribers and the number is expected to increase with time.
The workshop was organised by NITA-U, the ministry of ICT and the Uganda Communications Commission under the theme: "ICT a Pillar for Socio-Economic Development."
