All government departments and agencies will effective today be switched on to the National Backbone Infrastructure and e-government infrastructure cable.

President Museveni is expected to preside over the launch of the NBI in Kampala, which is expected to revolutionise communication among government departments and agencies and improve service delivery.

The NBI is expected to strengthen government strategies in utilising information and communications technology to create efficient government functions through simplified procedures and ensuring transparency, accountability and availability of timely information for citizens.

This follows the completion of the first and second phase of laying the government’s fibre optic cable also known as the National Data Transmission Backbone Infrastructure.

The first phase of the project was completed in 2008 and involved the laying of 168 kilometres of fibre optic cable to connect the towns of Mukono, Bombo, Entebbe and Jinja to Kampala.

The second phase of the project that has just been concluded involved the laying of 1368.39 kilometres of the cable to connect other 17 towns including Luweero, Nakasongola, Masindi, Gulu, Nimule, Lira, Soroti, Kumi, Mbale, Tororo, Malaba, Busia, Hoima, Kyenjojo and Fort Portal among others.

The third phase of the project to cover other towns is expected to commence in January next year and it is anticipated that it will be completed in June. Plans for Uganda to construct the 1,500 kilometres National Data Transmission Backbone Infrastructure cable started in 2006.
