The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) has created new platforms where members can access information about their savings.

The SMS and online service – all of which can be got over the mobile phone – will help members get information from anywhere, limiting the long journeys to the Fund’s office to seek clarification. To access balances through the sms platform, customers are required to type their NSSF number and send to 6773. Each SMS will cost Shs 220.

The fund has also provided a toll free call line (0800286773) that will be accessible between 7am and 9pm on week days. Addressing the press, NSSF Managing Director, Richard Byarugaba said the e-services will further save NSSF about Shs 50m per year which the Fund has been spending on printing manual statements.

“Our customers no longer have to come to our offices to access their statements. They can now check their balances on their mobile phones, access their full statements online and call us for free,” Byarugaba said.

“The e-services are efficient, speedy, instant, modern, transparent and they are free to the members,” he added. NSSF has 500,000 registered members and 9,020 registered employers. The Fund collects Shs 40bn per month, up from Shs 28bn at the beginning of the year, according to a press statement.

The fund’s net worth currently stands at Shs 2 trillion from Shs 1.8 trillion as of last year, according to the press statement.
