More than 25 speakers from Abu Dhabi municipalities and the world's largest mapping organisations will come together at the GIS Forum MENA this year. Slated to take place in Abu Dhabi from 8 to 9 September, the Forum will take on the potential of geographic information systems, or GIS, to fuel smart cities and drive return on investment (ROI) for both public and private organisations.

Drawing location data from devices such as our smartphones, GIS makes planning, resource management, and even investigations in science and crime more efficient, data scientists say. Add to this that the data can be mapped and modelled, and there is a formula to improve efficiency and control costs.

Khawla Al Fahim of the Abu Dhabi Spatial Infrastructure Center (ADSIC) champions GIS as a driver of profit and efficiency for governments and businesses. "When GIS and workflows are integrated, relationships, patterns and trends are revealed in the form of maps, globes, reports, and charts. At ADSIC, we believe that these visualisations help solve problems by allowing us to access data in a way that is quickly understood and easily shared," Ms. Al Fahim said.

According to Ms. Al Fahim, who serves as Executive Manager of the Spatial Data Center, GIS systems are key to modernising the services of Abu Dhabi's e-government and m-government. "Adding a spatial component to government services not only modernizes e-government, but it also improves service and communications channels for residents."

Eng. Khalid A. Hameed Al Hammadi, Acting Director of GIS Directorate in Bahrain agrees, adding that the maturity of GIS in the Kingdom has enabled better planning, decision making and governance in Bahrain. "We are now in a place where spatial datasets are acquired comprehensively and optimized strategically. At this stage, GIS is empowering both government and society by providing convenient and open access to high quality and up-to-date geographic information at the government level and spatially enabled e-government services for our residents."

The role of GIS in shaping the region's smart cities will dominate conversation when the conference opens on the 8th. Dr. Vanessa Lawrence, Secretary General of Ordnance Survey, the national mapping agency of Great Britain, will deliver the first keynote. Speaking from her position within the world's largest producer of maps, Dr. Lawrence will discuss the role of GIS in enhancing decision-making in urban environments.

Yasmeen Bani Hashem, GIS Expert at the Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council (UPC) will present a case study on the UPC Smart Geo Planner, a web based system that enables the UPC's planners to easily identify masterplans, planning policies and regulations for any location or area in the city. The Geo Planner also visually tracks the development proposal review and approval process, stomping out delays and confusion.

Attendees will also be introduced to the enterprise GIS roadmap that the Department of Municipal Affairs has implemented. DMA's own Omar Al Shaiba Al Marri, Director of Spatial Data and Property Division will unveil the municipal-wide system.

Eng. Hameed Al Hamadi will elbaorate on the business proposition of GIS in his presentation. "In this age of competitiveness," he says, "achieving increased efficiency through new technology is crucial. With the advent of affordable computer technologies and GIS, organizations have started to automate business functions to meet the challenges of the future."

An executive panel entitled, "Champioining GIS in Your Organisation" will present proven methods on how they have fruitfully implemented GIS within their organisations, and several speakers will focus on the investment prospects and returns generated by GIS in their businesses. Representatives of the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi will even present a local case study laying out a particular success.

The second day of the conference will focus on the technical applications of GIS and feature case studies from the Al Ain Distribution Company, the State Commission on Survey in Iraq, WS Atkins and Mobily. Numerous other lectures and approaches will also bring speakers from Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, Korea and the Netherlands to deliver the full range of experience.
