Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City recently launched a metropolitan area network (MAN) to help speed up the city's administrative reform, and its introduction of e-government and e-commerce.

The municipal People's Committee's high speed network will offer shared connections to over 90 users who are municipal departments, district people's commitees, mass organisations, State-owned units, and Party and socio-economic organisations of all levels in the city. With the operation of the network, HCM City expects to improve its administrative management efficiency.

It will also facilitate the operation of the city's existing IT projects such as Cityweb, the negotiations system between local businesses and the municipal authorities, and e-licensing.

The MAN will help ease congestion, improve the quality of video-conferencing services, and raise the quality of television services.

The network is part of a 40 billion VND (2.5 million USD) project being carried out by the Viet Nam Post and Telecommunications Corporation (VNPT). The first phase of the project is scheduled to be completed by the end of this month when it will allow the sharing of municipal sources to 45 users. The entire project is expected to be operational by the end of 2006.

VNPT has been conducting feasibility studies for building similar networks in the country's other major cities such as Ha Noi and Da Nang.
