Ho Chi Minh City’s administration has approved a VND226 billion (US$13.9 million) project to apply information technology (IT) at governmental agencies, a local official said recently.

The three-year project aims to improve a network – referred to as the Metropolitan area network or Metronet – connecting local departments, offices, districts and universities.

The project also aims to establish a city-level Internet Data Center for controlling Metronet and a center for notarization with digital signatures.

The project is scheduled to be launched this year, the city’s Department of Information and Communications Director Le Manh Ha said.

The southern metro has already succeeded in developing its e-government with technical infrastructure, software, and databases at city and department levels, according to the department.

To date, 20 governmental agencies in the city have made it possible for the public to check the status of their administrative documents online through the website http://motcua.icthcm.gov.vn
