VietNamNet Bridge - The Ministry of Information and Communications plans to concentrate its resources on expanding the application of information technology (IT) in 2008 with the aim of completing the e-government.

The plan was high on the agenda of the ministry’s conference held in Ha Noi on Jan. 11.

This year, the ministry will accelerate the development of IT network and diversify forms of services as well as speed up the IT application at all levels, and in all fields and economic sectors.

According to the ministry’s statistics, Viet Nam ’s telecommunication network experienced a strong development in 2007, with 19.5 million new telephone subscribers. As a result, the country now has 46.94 million phone subscribers, or 55.5 subscribers per 100 people, of which mobile phone users account for 75 percent.

Ten years after the Internet was introduced to Viet Nam , the 85 million-population country in 2007 was ranked amongst leading countries in Internet use with close to 20 million people having net access.

Especially, 2007 was a landmark in the IT application in State-owned agencies, laying the foundation for a professional and systematic e-government.

Also in 2007, made-in-Viet Nam electronic products, computers and components remained one of export staples, earning 3.9 billion USD in turnover.
