Vietnam ranks 91st of 192 UN member nations on the e-government development readiness index 2008, 14 places better than 2005.

The country is rated 16th for the readiness to use e-government services (the indicator of the people’s attention and participation in the government’s e-government programs and services). This is a great jump for Vietnam compared to 2005, when it was ranked 63rd.

Vietnam is listed in the group of Asian countries which have high e-government development readiness while Asia’s average e-government readiness index is a little bit lower than the world average.

In the latest UN research of the e-government development readiness index, Europe tops the list, followed by the US.

Some Asian nations fell in the ratings, for example India, which dropped 26 places down to 113th this year compared to 2005 (87th), the Philippines to 66th from 41st. The index of Singapore and Thailand also decreased by 16 grades, to 23rd and 62nd respectively.

Alongside Vietnam, Japan, Cambodia, China and Malaysia all improved. Ranking third, South Korea is the sole Asian country in the top ten. It ranks second after the US for the readiness to use and participate in e-government programs.
