The Smart City phase 2 project focuses on using digital technology to manage urban issues such as waste and environmental management, traffic management and public safety for citizens, especially tourists.
Siem Reap Provincial Administration officials, along with experts from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Monday deliberated measures to review and assess the progress of the Smart City pilot project phase 2.
Speaking at the technical working group meeting, Yun Linne, Deputy Governor of Siem Reap province, said, “The Smart City project is very important in transforming Siem Reap into a modern and convenient tourist destination for the local people.”
“The second phase of the project focuses on using digital technology to manage urban issues such as waste and environmental management, traffic management and public safety, and creating efficient public services for citizens, especially tourists.”
The discussions focused on the implementation of smart technology methods to address challenges and compiling data and work results to be submitted to the upcoming Joint Coordinating Committee (JCC) meeting to be held on Tuesday next week.
Linne further said, “Thorough preparations for the upcoming JCC meeting are a key step to ensure that the implementation of the Smart City approach in Siem Reap will yield fruitful results and respond to the city’s actual needs.”
He asked provincial stakeholders and partners to participate in the successful implementation of this project for the benefit of Siem Reap.
The Siem Reap administration has been working closely with development partners, particularly JICA, to promote this project in line with the smart city development vision of the Cambodian government, he emphasised.
A representative of the working group said that the pilot projects aimed to improve Pub Street and along the Siem Reap riverbank to encourage tourists to travel beyond just Pub Street, and increase the attractiveness of the surrounding areas, particularly the riverbank.
This project will expand the vitality of the Pub Street area, promote extensive city sightseeing, and support more accommodations.
The administration further laid out eight pilot projects of the two locations, including people tracking, social media awareness, greening the riverbank, urban traffic promotion, digital signage, public space utilisation, primary fire response, and smart traffic management. The bidding process will be different for each project.
“To achieve the planned goal, it requires strengthening the security and promoting how to connect the two locations together through walking,” said a group representative, adding, “We also believe that this project will make Pub Street a safer, easier to walk, and more enjoyable with better use of public spaces. The riverbank will also be more attractive, convenient, and have a better visitor experience, positioning the spot as the centre of smart city activities.”
