In February 2011, participating health authorities will deploy telecare services to hundreds of patients from central Greece as part of the RENEWING HEALTH (REgioNs of Europe WorkINg toGether for HEALTH) project.

Doctors affiliated to the 5th Regional Health Administration of Thessaly - Central Greece (5η Υγειονομική Περιφέρεια Θεσσαλίας - Στερεάς Ελλάδας, in Greek) will select patients suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary or cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes. These chronic patients will be regularly monitored at home and their treatment assessed on a continuous basis.

Chronic patients who meet the clinical criteria and wish to take part in the project receive free telemonitoring devices (tele-electrocardiographs, tele-spirometers, tele-glucometers and blood pressure meters) by the Telehealth Centre of the 11 Municipalities of the Digital Community of Central Greece and the Municipality of Trikala. These devices enable users to transmit vital sings via a land line or mobile phone to the telehealth centre of the municipality, and subsequently over wireless networks to the appropriate doctor.

On 18 January 2011, doctors underwent training in the use of telecare applications for the programme 'Telecare Implementation for the Effective Health Monitoring of Patients with Chronic Diseases in Remote Rural Areas of Greece'. The training was held at the premises of the 5th Regional Health Administration of Thessaly - Central Greece for medical staff from the Pulmonary, Cardiology and Endocrinology Clinic of the General University Hospital of Larissa; it was undertaken by a private contractor for the related tender of the municipality of Trikala concerning the telecare equipment of the programme. The event attracted relevant stakeholders from the 5th Regional Health Administration of Thessaly - Central Greece, the municipality of Trikala, e-Trikala and RENEWING HEALTH.

RENEWING HEALTH aims to improve the provision of healthcare services to chronic patients through the implementation of ICT-based healthcare services. It is partially funded (€7 million) by the EU's Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme and by the Greek Ministry of Health and Social Solidarity.

RENEWING HEALTH consists of 21 consortium partners from across Europe, and is made up of 9 regional authorities or regional healthcare providers in Austria, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Greece, Italy, Norway, Spain and Sweden. The project partners in Greece are the Municipality of Trikala, the 5th Regional Health Administration of Thessaly - Central Greece, e-Trikala AE and Digital Cities S.A. (Municipalities of the Digital Community of Larissa, Ioannina, Volos, Lamia, Kozani, Katerini, Veria, N. Ionia, Karditsa, Trikala and Grevena).
