Winning solutions in this year’s competition include improving energy efficiency and indoor climate of buildings, and optimising maintenance of urban greenery.
The City of Tallinn, in partnership with Tehnopol, has awarded a total of €145,000 to six Estonian companies as part of the Tallinnovation competition to develop and test innovative smart city solutions in urban space.
According to the City, Tallinnovation is a “breeding ground” where technologies that create new quality in urban space and aspire to the global market are born.
More inclusive urban environment
Winning solutions in this year’s competition include improving energy efficiency and indoor climate of buildings, optimising maintenance of urban greenery, managing infrastructure based on data, and designing a more inclusive urban environment.
“Tallinnovation combines the strategic goals of the city of Tallinn and its entrepreneurial potential. This is how solutions are born that not only improve the quality of urban space, but also open doors to foreign markets for Estonian technology companies,” said Margot Roose, deputy mayor of Tallinn.
“The addition of international partnerships confirms that Tallinn’s innovation activities are also an inspiration for other cities.”
The following projects received support:
- DeltaE Engineers: dynamic energy monitoring system (€27,220)
- Paul-Tech: soil station service (€28,500)
- Urban Farm: smart greenhouse – automatic, energy-efficient and app-controlled indoor plant system (€27,000)
- Road Technical Centre: data-based infrastructure measurement system (€20,760)
- 7sense: artificial forest-based accessible tourism and museum experience for visually impaired people (€20,760)
- ThinFacility: artificial turf indoor climate solution for public buildings (€20,760).
For the first time, the City reports, within the framework of Tallinninnovation, Estonian companies will have the opportunity to test their solutions outside of Estonia. In cooperation with the city of Heidelberg in Germany, up to two companies will be offered the opportunity to test their technology in an international urban space. Testing in Germany will be supported with an additional €15,000 in export funds.
“The opportunity offered to companies to test their solutions in a real urban environment helps bring innovations to people faster,” said Agnes Roos, CEO of Tehnopol. “Organising the innovation fund aligns with Tehnopol’s goal of supporting world-changing technology entrepreneurship – it is precisely such initiatives that help Estonian smart solutions reach the wider public and support a smarter and more sustainable future.”
Roos continued: “The strength of this year’s competition is also demonstrated by the fact that the entire amount was distributed – the level of the ideas submitted was truly exceptionally high.”
This is the sixth edition of Tallinninnovation and through it, according to City leaders, the city space of Tallinn is being designed to be smarter, more sustainable and more people centered. Through the competition, and reckon it strengthens cooperation with technology companies and gives them a real opportunity to turn prototypes into working solutions.
