The project addresses the issue of the majority of waste containers being only half-full when emptied while up to 10 per cent of them are overflowing.

The Estonian capital of Tallinn is deploying sensors in waste containers around the city to prevent containers from being overfilled and waste transport vehicles from running empty.

Tallinn Waste Centre, which is run by the City of Tallinn, is working with technology company ibiot to test the sensors that transmit a signal when the container is due to be emptied.

Increasing efficiency

Joosep Vimm, deputy mayor of Tallinn, the aim of the pilot project is to increase the efficiency of the waste centre’s work and the quality of the service. “New technology helps us to improve many established work routines,” he said.

“To do this, we must have the courage to experiment and use the collected data as wisely as possible. Hopefully, these sensors will prove to be effective devices in helping the operations of the waste centre.”

Rein Kalle, manager of the Tallinn Waste Centre, explained the test devices have been installed in eight clothing containers. “Since we are installing new clothes containers in the city this spring, we have gladly accepted the offer to test the new sensors,” said Kalle.

“In addition, we are testing the sensors’ capabilities on containers in seven large waste stations.”

Up to 70 per cent of the containers are emptied when half-full, while up to 10 per cent of the containers are overflowing at the time of emptying. Data collected from containers will allow the flexible management of collection and City of Tallinn estimate it will reduce costs by 20 per cent.

Within the framework of the pilot project, the collected data will be cross-referenced and analysed and used to inform and speed up decision-making. The project will last around six months.
