Internationally renowned as being in the forefront of eGovernment initiatives, Estonia’s latest step will help the country maintain its position as an innovation economy and make it easier for non-residents to interact with the authorities.
Estonia’s eResidence can be used by foreigners regardless of their country of origin when communicating with state agencies, and enables them to communicate quickly, safely and without paperwork.
Estonian citizens and residents are accustomed to using eID to sign documents, make bank transfers and identify themselves when dealing with the authorities. This latest step enables foreign residents to also take advantage of the technology.
The eResident digital ID is electronically distinguishable from a citizen of Estonia. However, like the country’s eID, the eResident must provide the same biometric data and documents to register for the digital ID.
