The two-year, 179,000 euro project is a joint effort of the University of Tartu and the Riga-based Pauls Stradins Clinical University Hospital and will involve three hospitals in southern Estonia and one in Latvia.
According to the project organizers at the University of Tartu, the special video conference system will be used for both diagnostical and distance training purposes. Dermatology, orthopedics and regenerative medicine are the three main fields in which cross-border cooperation is expected to develop the most, said Sulev Kõks, professor at Tartu.
"From a long-term perspective, the aim is to bring the medical sector of both countries in line with the principles of the European research and economic area and to ensure real freedom of cross-border movement for patients, treatments and technologies," said Kõks.
