“This is something the news on which has spread and everyone wants to see the developments with their own eyes – what does m-parking mean? What do Estonians do with ID cards? What do e-elections look like?” explained Kaunissaare.
Every week, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs published an overview on foreign press. “The tone is generally positive – Estonia is seen as a small hard-working country and there are certain keywords that associate with Estonia,” she stated. According to her, journalists often come to Estonia with lower expectations and are surprised after arriving here to note that the rumours are true.
Kaunissaare noted that some generalisations might not work in Estonia’s favour. “While in relation to culture Estonia can clearly be defined on the map, in economic terms we tend to be one of the Baltic States and that is not quite how we would like to be perceived,” she explained.
