The Czech Republic has launched two new websites to inform the public on hygiene-related issues for outdoor bathing sites and children's summer camps, it was announced on 24 June 2011.

Regional hygiene stations (Krajská hygienická stanice - KHS, in Czech) monitor water quality at selected lakes during the summer, roughly May to September. In the period of the school summer holidays, the stations are also engaged in monitoring health levels at children's camps.

The data they collect are permanently stored in hygiene registers. Based on the evaluation of these data hygienists then decide on the measures required to protect people's health. For bathing waters, an important decision concerns their suitability or unsuitability for swimming. These decisions can then be conveyed to the public on the official notice board, and by newspapers, radio, television and websites.

The new websites www.koupacivody.cz (for bathing waters) and www.taboryinfo.cz (for summer camps) have been set up to convey this information via a digital map. Using the websites is simple. On www.koupacivody.cz, the different bathing sites are marked on the digital map using a smiley in one of five different colours representing the water quality. Clicking on the smiley causes a balloon to open up with basic information on the bathing site, the water quality, the last testing date and the available facilities (restaurants, toilets, facilities for children, etc.). On www.taboryinfo.cz, information about the summer camps (venue, operator, drinking water, diet, date of last check) can be extracted in the same way. The websites also provide links to other sites covering bathing waters and camps.

The websites are a collaboration between specialists from regional hygiene stations and technicians from the Coordinating Centre for the Department of Healthcare Information Systems (Koordinační středisko pro resortní zdravotnické informační systémy - KSRZIS, in Czech).
