The Czech web-based electronic health records system 'IZIP' has over 1.65 million users. Since mid-May 2010 it has been possible for citizens to register via www.izip.cz to obtain their personal electronic health records. Likewise, logging in the system has been simplified.

The use of these electronic health records (EHR, in English - eZk, in Czech) is becoming standard for both the general public and healthcare professionals. The new online registration method is fast, simple and entirely free of charge - and so is the record keeping.

A few days after completing the online registration form, the users will receive by traditional mail the codes needed to access their eZk. Before the first connection to their eZk, they must set up their personal password to be able to view their health record, fill out their personal details and write notes.

Another novelty is the simplified way of logging in the system for existing users; they only need to enter two figures, namely their client identification number and their personal password.

The data stored on the eZk are accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The level of data security is comparable to that of Internet banking. It is worth noting that the project has been running for seven years with no abuse or assault taking place whatsoever.

"There are several ways of joining IZIP, but with the new online registration system we expect a further dramatic increase in the number of users of the electronic health records as this is a very easy way to access this unique service." said Jiří Pašek, the head of IZIP Ltd. "We also facilitate the access to the web application itself while maintaining extremely high data security." he added.

According to the IZIP press release, the eZk's extremely high security level lies with the fact the data are stored separately; on one server goes the health data that is public, on the other the rest of the information - including the contact information (name, surname and address of the patient). The patient is the only holder of the access password allowing the transfer of data from one server to another. Without this password, it is not possible to determine which medical data belongs to the patient.

"The online registration to IZIP and the system's easiness of use are currently being presented in the frame of the Health Days, which are organised across the country to provide free tests - cholesterol and sugar levels, blood pressure and weight measurement (...).These examinations are associated with sports and entertainment attractions, where every visitor can verify their physical condition" explained Tomáš Mládek, Vice-chairman of the IZIP Ltd. Board and IZIP spokesman.
