Saudi Arabia's Neom, a planned futuristic city in the Tabuk Province, is all set for issuing its very first tenders for building a renewable power grid this year, as per Jens Madrian, the executive director of Neom Energy.

Stating on the technical design of their high voltage power grid, Mr. Madrian said that they are expected to reach out to the market later this year.

The first tender packages will be issued in 400MW to 800 MW. This is not massive, but it's relatively sized at this stage, with a lot more to come in the way.

Neom, which is planned to be built at the borders of Saudi Arabia with Jordan and just around the fine Channel of Aqaba from Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, is one of the essential plans for the world's largest oil exporter for diversifying its economy dominated with fossil fuels.

It will be home to the most significant green hydrogen projects globally and will be probably spanning 26,500 sq km. In addition, it will also be operating as a carbon-neutral city which will be able to accommodate around 1 million people.

Madrian further stated that energy consumption from the planned region is estimated to be around 50 TWh to 60 TWh at the very minimum. They could also witness substantial growth as per the uptake of energy-intensive industries currently demanding 100% renewable power supply.

The energy industry activities will be inclusive of the planned green hydrogen product and renewables-based detoxification for both public consumption and for use in electrolysis to produce green hydrogen.

Furthermore, Saudi Arabia is constructing green hydrogen projects in Neom. The Riyadh-based ACWA Power and Air Products project will be completed by Q1 of 2026. It is expected to produce around 240,000 mt/year of green hydrogen, which will be processed into 1.2 million mt/year of ammonia.
