The General Directorate of Prisons has linked 120 jails in the Kingdom through intranet. The project, called Irtiqa and launched as part of the ongoing implementation of e-government, is firewalled against hacking.

Director General of Prisons Maj. Gen. Ali Al-Harithy and Deputy Director General of Prisons Maj. Gen. Ali Al-Qahtani attended the function at the directorate in Riyadh where the network was launched.

Director of Technical Administration in the directorate Brig. Matrouk Al-Rowaili said Irtiqa covered departments such as administrative affairs, finance, budget, payroll, pension, purchases, contracts, transportation, training and health matters. He added that all offices of the directorate and its branches would be linked in the next phase of the project.

In another development, Tarahum (the committee for the welfare of prisoners and ex-prisoners) visited last week the women’s section of Briman Prison in Jeddah. Member of Tarahum’s legal committee Bayan Zahran told Arab News that the women prisoners including 15 Saudis benefited from improved training, educational and cultural programs organized in the jail.
