The electronic government program, which was introduced in the Kingdom back in 2003, has so far not been able to satisfy the ambitions of citizens and only made slow progress, officials involved in the project said Wednesday.

A survey on the Internet, which began early this year and was still going on, showed that 115 out of 242 people believed that it could not be rated more than “acceptable,” they said.

A number of the people surveyed believed that the project needed further development in order to be effective. According to the survey, 49 people said the electronic government was good.

Asked about the electronic services they used most, 27 people answered that they downloaded application forms and documents while 26 others said they used the e-mails and mobile text messages most.

Many of the citizens questioned called for developing the various online government services, while some of them asked for further developing the mobile services.

Talking to Arab News, a number of experts were unanimous in their stand that many aspects of the electronic government were in need of revamping in order for the citizens to recognize it and deal with it normally. They, however, said the success of the government also depended on the citizens themselves, who should not shy away from the electronic government and start dealing with it widely.

They said people did not need to go to government offices anymore and could do most of their office paperwork on the Internet.
