Under the instructions of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah, the Kingdom is planning to set up a digital electronic encyclopedia on health, President of General Intelligence Prince Muqrin announced in Riyadh on Sunday.

Prince Muqrin, who is also chairman of the Saudi Association for Health Informatics (SAHI), made this announcement while inaugurating the Saudi E-Health 2010 smyposium at the King Faisal Conference Hall.

“Such an encyclopedia will provide comprehensive health information to millions of Arabs in the world," Prince Muqrin said, adding that the idea is to help everyone in the Arab world keep abreast of the recent advancements in health and provide them with required information and data.

He added that the world is passing through an important stage in which people are witnessing technology play an important role in disseminating information. He added that the Kingdom is contributing a great deal in developing science and technology. The event has been organized by SAHI in collaboration with King Saud University (KSU) and King Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences.

Some 50 e-health experts, three health ministers from Oman, Yemen and the United Arab Emirates, and deputy ministers of health from other regional countries also attended the inauguration. The prince also inaugurated an exhibition that is running concurrently with the three-day meeting in the precincts of the conference hall. Sponsors of the event are also showcasing their latest products and services.

SAHI Chairman Majid Al-Twaijri said the conference, which is being held biennially since 2006, aims to explore the latest technologies, updated systems as well as rapid advancements in this field worldwide. “The meeting also aims to create a distinct environment to transfer experience and expertise in this area through the participation of a number of authorities such as companies and local and international personalities working in the field of e-health,” he said.

He also said that SAHI membership has increased multifold due to people's interests in keeping themselves abreast of recent technological advancements.

"The purpose of Saudi E-Health 2010 conference is to bring together both healthcare providers and information technologists to empower advancements in the delivery, quality and continuity of health care," he said.

He added that SAHI and health care communities will offer abundant opportunities for interaction and collaboration along with the National E-health initiative as guided by the Ministry of Health.

Health Minister Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah said the Ministry of Health has already started a strategy for e-health. He added that his ministry will also coordinate with other countries in the region to exchange experience in the relevant field.
