The Ministry of Defense and Aviation (MoDA) is implementing a major unified medical system in 26 of its hospitals and 68 of its medical centers and clinics across six of the Kingdom’s regions.

The project is being implemented by MoDA’s Medical Services Division (MSD), and covers the northwestern, southern, central, eastern, western and Taif regions of Saudi Arabia.

“The project, which is expected to become operational by May, aims to link all MSD hospitals under one unified medical system that makes it easier for all members of the Armed Forces, who are relocated constantly, to locate their medical records wherever they go in the Kingdom,” said Khalid Suleimani, chairman and CEO of Alcantara Group of Companies (Al-Sharika Al-Arabia Lel-Anzema Al-Tejariyah Wa Al-Senaeyya Ltd.).

“The new Electronic Medical Record system is more advanced than systems used before,” he added.

The first attempt to link the hospitals happened 15 years ago. It, however, failed.

Alcantara won the project by submitting a proposal including three main computer systems, which includes Nexus. Medfolio, and the health information system (HIS) from German company Nexus AG, which provides systems to over 600 hospitals around Europe.

The project’s collaborators — in addition to the enterprise resource planning system (ERP) from the Swedish IFS company, one of the top 10 ERP providers around the world — include an infrastructure system and a database from Sun Microsystems and Oracle database.

The project consists of 18 sub-projects in three major phases spread across the six regions.

The first phase of the project consists of six projects relating to infrastructure. The phase will last for approximately six months and is aimed at establishing data centers in the main hospitals of the six regions.

The second phase involves the implementation of the financial and administrative systems of IFS. The third phase involves the formation of “electronic medical records” containing all information and medical data entered by doctors, X-ray departments, laboratories and pharmacies.

“All of these systems are connected together to ease the process of getting patient medical history at once,” Suleimani said, adding that the systems consist of more than 35 different modules serving different needs.

Alcantara group is one of the Kingdom’s top systems integration companies and a major provider of HIS and ERP.

The company aims to contribute to e-government initiatives in the Kingdom and the rest of the Gulf by bringing in state of the art expertise from major information and communication technology players in the world.
