According to the Chief Executive Officer of the NHIA, Mr Sylvester Mensah, even though people could access health care using the old NHIS cards, there was still a rush for the new cards which unfortunately resulted in congestion in some registration centres in the metropolis.
Recently, the registration centres at Nungua, Adenta, Ablekuma and La were crowded as people trooped there in their numbers to register and collect their new biometric cards.
That situation was attributed to a slowdown in the connectivity of the biometric machines used in the exercise.
Mr Mensah, who led a five-member team to visit some of the centres, however, expressed optimism that the opening of the new centres would help address some of the problems, including over-crowding.
The exercise was to gather information and to acquaint the team with the challenges in order to solicit ways of addressing them.
Challenges
Addressing the media, the Chief Executive Officer, Mr Mensah, said the idea behind the registration was to enable subscribers to access quality health care using the new biometric NHIS card.
“However, we have encountered a number of situations as subscribers insist on changing their old NHIS cards and have a new card while the old cards hadn’t expired and also because the new card appears bright,” he observed.
Commitment
Mr Mensah assured the public that it was possible to receive free medical care with the old NHIS card at any health facility, adding that “there is no need to register at the centre for a new card when the card has not expired”.
That, he said, would help generate and create decency at various registration centres.
In addition, he commended the employees at the centres for their hard work and dedication to hit the target set by the scheme.
Mr Mensah, therefore, gave an assurance to respond to the challenges facing the centres and provide efficient and effective biometric machines to enhance the registration.
