He said any country that failed to harness the power of ICT effectively would be locked out and forced to remain a marginal player on the global economic stage.
He, therefore, entreated the youth to acquire the necessary skills needed to harness the benefits that the ICT regime offered.
Dr Osei Darkwa said this in a speech read on his behalf at the Second Matriculation of the GTUC, Takoradi Campus, on Saturday.
The university admitted 80 fresh students made up of 56 males and 24 females pursuing Diploma and Degree progammes in Engineering, Informatics and ICT Business.
Dr Darkwa said the university had designed relevant programmes that would bring students up to speed with global demands so that its graduates would make meaningful contributions to the country’s socio-economic development.
“Today we find ourselves in a more complex global economy where knowledge, learning communities, information and communication technologies are the engines for social and economic development, and I urge you to make a mark in this global world,” he said.
He entreated the matriculants to learn assiduously to achieve set goals to justify the investment made in them by their parents and guardians.
Mr Kobina Okyere-Darko Mensah, Member of Parliament (MP) for Takoradi, said the focus of the global workforce would shift to Africa by 2035 and, therefore, entreated the matriculants to take advantage to acquire the skills needed to fit into the new global economy.
He said GTUC was the right place to acquire the necessary tools to lead the new technological frontier so as to contribute their quota towards the country’s socio-economic advancement.
The MP urged the students to be creative and acquire entrepreneurial skills that would enable them to establish their own businesses instead of relying on the government for non-existing jobs.
Madam Nusrat-Jahan Abubakar, Assistant Registrar of the University, administered the Matriculation Oath to officially usher in the fresh students into the university for the 2014/2015 academic year.
She urged them to obey the school authorities and strictly adhere to the rules and regulations governing the university.
