The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has commenced a pilot project to register new subscribers onto the NHIS Biometrically.

The exercise which began on Monday, June 17, 2013 is expected to last for a month and will also cover membership renewals.

The pilot exercise is being undertaken in two districts, Ayawaso and La, in the Greater Accra region and is limited to a selected number of personnel from the Ghana Police Service and Ghana Armed Forces only.

The Biometric registration exercise comes with instant issuance of NHIS ID cards.

It is expected that a successful pilot would be followed by a nation-wide scale-up of the exercise.

Health service providers for this pilot are the 37 Military and Police Hospitals in Accra.

The key objectives for implementing the Biometric Solution are to issue instant membership ID cards leading to improved card management.

It is also aimed at cleaning the membership database by using a Biometric Solution as a means of preventing duplicate records and to implement an effective verification (authentication) system at the point of healthcare service delivery.

The Authority is therefore appealing to the general public to cooperate to make this exercise a success.
