The long-awaited biometric registration exercise took off at selected polling stations nationwide on Saturday. The exercise, which is being done in phases, is to replace the existing voters’ register and by implication nullify previous Voter ID cards.

The supervisory body, Electoral Commission of Ghana, has given the assurance that they are poised to ensure a successful exercise that is aimed at curtailing electoral fraud such as double registration and voting among others.

The Head of the Public Affairs of the EC, Christian Owusu Parry told Citi News their men are on the ground to see to problems that may arise during the process and do not foresee any major hitch that will stall the process.

Mr. Parry said the commission has met with all political parties to deliberate on major issues ahead of the start of the exercise.

About 45,000 EC officials have been deployed to the 7,000 polling stations across the country. Political parties have been urging their supporters to move in their numbers to register as that is the only ticket to grant them access to vote during the December elections.

The biometric voter registration will end on May 5, 2012.
