Political parties in Ghana are calling on the Electoral Commission to organise an Inter Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting ahead of the pilot implementation of the biometric voter registration exercise.

The exercise will involve the collection of biometric data such as finger prints and facial scans of voters.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP for Manhyia in the Ashanti region, Dr. Matthew Opoku-Prempeh, told Citi News that the IPAC meeting is important to thoroughly educate the political parties on the intricacies of the biometric registration.

“Otherwise it may be difficult for the political parties to help the EC achieve its aims and objectives,” he said.

However, Ahmed Mohammed Gadel, the Technical Advisor on the Biometric System Application for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) said there are many outstanding issues the EC needs to address before such an action can be taken.

Gadel said: “The failure rate, error rate, and the demographic parameters, are all key issues that are not being resolved. If some of these things are not looked at then we are really going to have a problem as far as the piloting of the biometric is concerned. ”

On their part, the Conventions People’s Party (CPP) also endorsed the initiative that the EC should hold training programs for the political parties as soon as possible.

Nii Armah Akomfrah, the Communications Director for the party stressed that the EC has little time to properly launch the exercise.

The People’s National Convention (PNC) and the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) are also calling for more public education ahead of the exercise.
