Members of Parliament are to receive laptops free of charge under government’s e-governance project to enhance their work.

Communications Minister Haruna Iddrissu who disclosed this to Joy News said the move was to help the MPs research into the issues that come up for debate in Parliament.

He said the laptops will also help deal with the volumes of papers MPs carry because of the unavailability of offices.

Asked what the justification for the provision of laptops to MPs who are capable of acquiring some themselves was, Mr. Iddrisu said, “Parliament is such an important institution and if we are serious - in the 21st Century – we should be talking about e-Parliament, e-cabinet.”

The Communications Minister insisted government can make huge savings from the money used for the procurement of stationary to public institutions, to support education.

The laptops will be handed over to the leadership of Parliament at a ceremony later today.
