Microsoft and the Ministry of Communication have agreed to partner a project that will deliver high-quality ICT policy training to public sector workers.

The project will see the establishment of a Microsoft eGovernment Centre designed to facilitate professional and organisational capacity building within the government.

This objective will kick-start a roll-out of eGovernment initiatives across the country.

The centre will among other activities develop and host training workshops for senior Government Officials and Civil Servants on eGovernment programmes and Best Practices.

These workshops will focus on issues such as ICT for community and economic development, policy requirements for effective governance, and computer awareness training.

According to the Minister of Communication, Hon. Iddrisu Haruna, the project is intended to build the capability of the Ministry of Communications to equip policymakers with a modern education on technology policy trends that will improve the success rate of ICT projects in Ghana.

He said eGovernance is also an integral aspect of how African governments will deliver better services by improving their efficiencies, transparency, driving procurement practices, sharing information across borders, and managing risk across departments.

“Technology is one key element that will help Ghana drive itself to economic prosperity,” he added.

Microsoft believes that this initiative will address challenges with regard to the reasons that ICT projects rarely work in Africa.

According to Emmanuel Onyeje, Country Manager, Microsoft Anglophone West Africa, technology can be an empowering tool for the African continent - thus it is important that government be given the necessary knowledge and capacity to make informed decisions about their technology rollout strategies.

He concluded that the centre is an important part of a larger governmental effort to put in place the building blocks for a sustainable, multi-year government training programme on ICT policy in Ghana.
