The Ghana Health Service (GHS) on Friday launched its corporate website in fulfilment of national ICT policy document known as ICT for Accelerated Development (ICT4AD).

The ICT4AD that, was launched in 2004 by government identified health as one of the priority sectors in which the broad adoption of ICT could enable the government to achieve its developmental goals.

Dr Elias Sory, Director-General of GHS, at the launch in Accra said the website, was being established in response to directives to all Ministries, Departments and Agencies to translate the national policy into sector specific ICT policies and strategies.

He said, the health sector ICT policy and strategy as developed by the Ministry of Health, provided the framework for the use of ICT in the health sector.

“The GHS is being repositioned to address the objectives of the ICT4AD in general and eHealth policy and strategy in particular and tap into the immense opportunities ICT offers and also pursue IT Governance,” he added.

Dr Sory explained that the health care industry was heavily dependent on data and information since copious amount of data was generated during the interaction with patients, processing of financial transactions, research and other related activities.

“We believe that the effective use of ICT is critical to the successful discharge of the mandate of the Ghana Health Service.”

Mr. Sam Quarshie, Deputy Director in-charge of ICT, GHS, said the website would be the official mouthpiece of the Service and would involve the collection of pages made up of text, videos and other helpful information about activities and programmes of GHS.

“The website, www.ghanahealthservice.org will readily give information about GHS without travelling all the way to the headquarters to access such information,” Mr Quarshie said.

Information on the web would include services that are offered by district and regional hospitals, background of GHS and its mandate, organizational chart and Patient Charter.
