A new service called 'HelloDoctor' has been launched in Turkey which enables mobile phone users to get a direct video link with a doctor in order to obtain emergency or general health information.

The initiative is a joint venture by one of Turkey's mobile phone operators and a mobile health (mHealth) provider. Smartphone customers will be connected by video link from any of the 81 cities covered by the third-generation (3G) service to a call centre, where 20 doctors will take calls 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The doctors will offer general medical advice and recommendations on medicines, rather than diagnosing illnesses or prescribing treatments. They will also provide nutritional information to children and advice on growth conditions.

If the health problem is considered to be serious, the doctors can request emergency assistance for the caller.

Users will be charged with a monthly subscription fee of €2.40 and calls are charged at 10 cents per minute.

Dr Ozgur Turgay, general manager of the mHealth provider, said that he expects around 100 000 people to sign up for the service by the end of 2010.
